The Flinders Ranges are a group of scenic mountain ranges in the dry north of the state of South Australia.

Most visitors to the Flinders pass through the small towns of Quorn and Hawker without spending much time in the area. I hope that this page will indicate that the area has plenty of beauty of its own.

The images on this page have been compressed for faster loading - this may lead to some noticeable loss of quality in some images.

Kanyaka
Kanyaka homestead ruins

Kanyaka was once the biggest outpost of 'civilization' in the region. Informative notice boards in the area give a hint of what life must have been like in this, then, very isolated part of the fledgling colony of South Australia.

Kanyaka woolshed
This would have to be one of the most impressive old woolsheds in South Australia, if not in Australia. Some 40 000 sheep were shorn here around 1864

Mt Fuji
The Hills of Arkaba

This area was first made famous by well known South Australian artist Hans Heysen.

The hill in the middle distance is loosely called Mount Fuji, for obvious reasons. In the distance is the Elder Range.

Warren Gorge is off a minor road between Quorn and Hawker.

What makes Warren (and Buckaringa) Gorge unusual in the Flinders Ranges is that the flint-hard quartzite beds have been tilted up almost exactly 90 degrees from their original flat orientation.
