Brown Hill Range Wind Farm, also called Hallett #1

Photography by Dave Clarke unless otherwise noted.

More of my wind turbine photos are on Flickr

The Brown Hill Range Wind Farm is one of a group of farms built in the Mid North of South Australia.

The images on this page have been compressed for faster loading - this has lead to conspicuous loss of quality in some images.
(These images are typically around 0.3MP and the files 30kB, the originals are 5MP and around 1MB.)

This turbine was built several months before the other 44 of the Brown Hill Range Wind Farm. It was the first utility scale wind turbine to be built in Mid-North SA, which became, a few years later, the biggest centre of wind power in the country.

This view is from the Bundaleer forest.

Windmill and wind turbine Old and new wind power machines

The pre-existing high capacity power line is one of the reasons Hallett Wind Farm is located where it is.

Turbine #1 on the right, the two lower sections of the tower of another turbine is near the centre of the photo.

Hallett power station Hallett power station is a gas-fired peaking station located on the intersection of the Moomba-Adelaide gas pipeline and a high capacity power line from Port Augusta power station.

This view is from Brown Hill ridge on which the Hallett #1 wind turbines were being built.

Lifting first section Lifting the first of four sections of one of the 45 towers to be built. The red crane has a capacity of 300 tonnes, and the white, 100t.

Guiding the bottom tower section over the four tall guide bolts.

Once on the four guide bolts the tower base will align with all the many other bolts (well over a hundred of them).

Dead tree

Weather-beaten

I was told that this tree, on the Brown Hill ridge, is the most photographed tree in the vicinity. I could well believe it. (There were very few others.)

2007/12/12 Dawn, construction

Sunrise

First sunlight on a summer morning

Twelve turbines were completed at this time.

This image is a combination of three photos using HDR processing.

Trees and turbine

Remnant trees

There are few trees on Brown Hill Range; I've tried to use these to make the picture more interesting.

Turbines and blades

'Sand dunes'

Looking over some turbine blades stored in a yard on the plain toward some of the completed turbines on the range

This is one of my favourite photos

Construction One of the big cranes used for lifting the upper half of the towers and turbines

I was told the really big crane was off on another job!

Stumps

Stumps

Stumps of turbines to be completed march off into the distance.

The very weathered old log in the foreground and the trees in the near gully and the distance show how sparce the remnant native vegetation is near Brown Hill Range.

Tower lift

Tower lift

The lower two sections of the towers were lifted by smaller cranes. The biggest cranes in Australia were needed to lift the upper sections into place.

Rotor lift

Rotor lift

The last of the big lifts for this turbine, the rotor is raised into place. This step, in particular, requires relatively calm weather.

The air navigation lights on the wind farm were conspicuous from Elysium, 50km away, where these photos were taken. The lights were turned off around the end of 2009.

Early clouds

Sun on clouds

The sun is shining on the clouds, but not yet on the ridge and turbines. The 1/8th second shutter speed blurred the blades and gave some impression of the movement.

I had to wait while the sun rose above the cloud bank in the east to catch the early morning light on the turbines.

My drone was flown from a nearby public road and allowed me to get a perspective close to one of the turbines with some of the others in the background.

It was a fairly calm day; the turbines were hardly moving.
