The likely coming collapse of modern society: the probable catastrophic failure of the global civilisation

It seems to me at the time of writing that the globalised civilisation of the present is becoming more and more a house of cards that will, if a critical card or two is removed at the wrong time will collapse.

We have seen hints of this, first with the Subprime Mortgage shocks that led to the Global Financial Crisis of 2007-2008, more recently the disruptions due to COVID-19, the rise of a militant culture of ignorance in the USA and the global disruptions due to the criminal Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Factors that could be involved in a major collapse of our globalised society include:
  • A war that involves the destruction of satellites with consequent breakdowns in many things including communications and positioning services (GPS);
  • Loss of supply of critical integrated circuits;
  • Lack of necessary parts due to breakdown of the globalised system;
  • Suspension of acceptance of fact and science ("alternative truth", people believing whatever they choose to believe, with or without evidence);
  • Failure in the transport of goods due to lack of fuel or parts;
  • Disparity of wealth;
  • People reacting violently to being left out;
  • Breakdown in law and order;
  • Failure of democracy because decent people will no longer be attracted to serve.
Most likely will be a cascading series of failures that will feed off each other and relate to globalisation. Shortages of fuel and breakdown of electrical networks will be factors. Cities will become unliveable because of lack of transport, food, water supplies sanitation.

The current situation in the USA, particularly with the devision of the country into two camps that seem unable to communicate effectively with each other (for example pro-Trump and anti-Trump)EndGlobCiv.html#War_in_space, could be a hint of things to come.

For a time people living in subsist and primitive farms could be the best off, but they would eventually be overrun by the starving hordes from the cities,

People on islands may suffer least, but I would think that marauders similar to the Vikings will live by raiding the remaining pockets of civilisation.

Humanity will probably persist, but it will be in greatly reduced numbers and in a very different societal form.

Integrated circuits risk

The disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic saw serious disruptions in the supply of goods that rely on integrated circuits that were made in one or only a very few places in the world.
